  TRUE SUCCESS

Talked about having a giving attitude......

We’ve talked about having a giving attitude, instead on being someone always on the lookout for “Number One.” Someone who understood this concept intimately was World War I hero Sergeant Alvin York. When we opened our corporate offices in Franklin Tennessee, I was reminded of Sergeant York. He’s the state’s “Favorite Son.”

They have monuments to him, and even named a highway after him. I remember seeing this old black and white movie as a kid, about this hillbilly who took out 32 German soldiers, knocked out 35 German machine guns and captured 132 prisoners, single-handedly. He saved his platoon and was awarded the Medal of Honor.

So what did Sergeant York do with all that success? I mean he had a ticker tape parade in Manhattan, he had book deals and movie deals and speaking engagements… you name it. Instant celebrity! He could have made a ton of money.

Instead, after he came home from the war, he used all the money he made to bring education to the poverty-stricken mountain kids in Tennessee.

He didn’t profit from any of it personally, but he is considered Tennessee’s most beloved and successful citizen of all time (Elvis may have more fans, but he’s only a distant second to York when it comes to state pride for their “Favorite Son!”). ("Page 166-167")
